Business description
General Description
If you are looking for a very unique business then this is as unique as you will find in Canberra. Canberra Reptile Sanctuary has been operating from the Gold Creek Village, Nicholls since 1998. Its main focus to date has been promoting research, conservation, and education as a not for profit entity by exhibiting some of Australia’s, and the world’s, largest and most venomous snakes. The logical next step is to open a retail shop to service the growing hobbyist industry.
Not for profit part of the business – how it works
To date Canberra Reptile Sanctuary has paid nil tax as it operates as a not for profit entity. All admissions to the Sanctuary along with the retail sales within the current shop cover the rent, staff, electricity etc. This has happened with little to no promotion and still much room to expand.
What makes the display of reptiles unique in Canberra is this is the only place in Canberra with a Crown lease to do so. This Crown lease is very secure and no one else in Canberra has the right to do anything similar.
Trade live animals – new side to the business
The owner has invested heavily in importing reptile husbandry equipment to add a retail side to the business to service the hobbyist industry. The premises have 64sqm of space available for this new shop with the retail equipment currently in storage. The new owners of the business will need to assemble and establish this side of the business which will also enhance the exhibition side.
Other Potential
Though the Canberra Reptile Sanctuary has been in place since 1998, and regardless of the obvious advancement a shop area can make, there is still room to increase patron numbers as year on year have seen increases to patrons and turn over. There is still some space internally to put more exhibits and the owner has been given permission from the landlord to build outdoor exhibits.
Offsite exhibitions at schools, science fairs, and other public events is something that currently takes place but is certainly an area that can be expanded further, and with venomous species to display, it is the only attraction of its type.
Features
Established location with excellent high quality displays and return patronage. Onsite free parking. The exhibition side of the business can be separated from the destined shop area with two external doors leading to each side and an internal door connecting the two. Daily manager in place that can attend to the exhibition five days per week. Still much room for increases to the exhibition, and much potential in developing the retail arm. The Reptile Centre forms part of a number of exhibits in the area including Cockington Green, the National Dinosaur Museum, and the Walk-in Avairy.
Specialised Area
The reptile pet hobby in Australia is a growing industry. 2008 saw reptiles as the number one pet in the UK, and 2009 Europe broadly, Australia is on the same path. The combination of a public reptile exhibit with the retail arm is a perfect match to service the industry. Furthermore, this business is the only one between Sydney and Ballarat with venomous reptiles, it is a major draw card and destination location for tourism.
